Journey into the “Forbidden Kingdom” with our Upper Mustang Trek, a popular trekking destination in Nepal. This adventure takes you to the remote and ancient kingdom of Lo Manthang, once part of the Tibetan plateau. The region, isolated until 1992, still retains its unique culture and traditions.
The trek begins from Jomsom, accessible by flight or road from Pokhara. You’ll traverse traditional villages like Kagbeni, Chele, Syangboche, Tsarang, and Lo Manthang, all while enjoying stunning views of the Dhaulagiri and Annapurna mountain ranges.
The Upper Mustang region lies in the rain shadow area of the Himalayas, resulting in an arid and dry climate. The best time to trek is from March to November, when the weather is clear and the skies are blue. In winter, the region is blanketed in snow, and temperatures can drop to sub-zero levels.
The inhabitants of this region are predominantly Buddhists, and their culture is heavily influenced by Tibetan Buddhism. You’ll encounter ancient monasteries, chortens, and caves dating back to the 8th century. The Tiji Festival, which takes place in May, is one of the region’s most significant festivals, featuring locals performing traditional dances in colorful costumes.
The Upper Mustang Trek is a moderate-level trek requiring good physical fitness and stamina. You’ll navigate high passes like Nyi La Pass (4,010m), Taklam La Pass (3,624m), and Dhi La Pass (3,820m). Crossing several rivers and streams can be challenging during the monsoon season.
The trek offers stunning views of the Himalayan landscape, including the snow-capped peaks of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri. The region is home to several endangered species like the snow leopard, Himalayan Thar, and musk deer.
In conclusion, the Upper Mustang Trek takes you to a remote and ancient kingdom untouched by modernization.
